A Holistic Model of Recovery

The biopsychosocial-spiritual model takes a whole-person approach to recovery,
recognizing that addiction is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted solution.

This model recognizes that biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors all play a role in addiction, recovery, and that all factors are interconnected and influence each other. The biopsychosocial-spiritual model integrates biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors into a comprehensive approach to healthcare. This model emphasizes the importance of addressing the whole person, rather than just treating isolated symptoms. By addressing all of these factors in a comprehensive treatment plan, individuals in recovery can achieve lasting success and lead fulfilling lives free from addiction.

Biological

Prioritizing physical wellness as part of the recovery journey by way of regular exercise and healthy eating habits not only helps promote physical health but boosts mood and reduces stress levels. Along with the physical benefits, taking care of our physical wellbeing can help rebuild self-esteem and confidence and improve chances of sustained sobriety. Exercise can also help us develop a sense of discipline and routine, which can be particularly beneficial for those in recovery.

Psychological

Addiction is often linked to underlying psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. By addressing these issues in therapy, we can learn coping strategies and develop a better understanding of our behavior and patterns. Additionally, therapy can help develop the skills needed to maintain sobriety and manage triggers and cravings. Psychological wellness involves the ability to manage emotions effectively, cope with stress, build positive relationships, and engage in meaningful activities. Psychological wellness is crucial for maintaining good physical health, personal growth and development, and maintaining sobriety.

Social

Social wellness involves building and maintaining positive and meaningful relationships with others, engaging in social activities, and participating in the community. Building a strong social network of family, friends, and peers who can provide emotional support throughout the recovery process is crucial in the recovery process. Experiencing the positive feelings of belonging and connection to a community reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation, and promotes overall happiness and wellbeing. Social wellness can also involve developing strong communication and interpersonal skills, learning how to resolve conflicts more effectively, and being open to different perspectives and cultures.

Spiritual

By fostering a connection with something greater than ourselves, we can find the strength and resilience needed to overcome the challenges we face in sobriety. Spirituality is a crucial component of recovery, providing a sense of purpose and meaning beyond the physical and material world. Spirituality can take many forms, from religious practices to meditation and mindfulness, and can provide a source of comfort and support during difficult times. Incorporating spirituality into the recovery process can help develop a deeper sense of inner peace and calm, promote self-awareness, and encourage focus on positive values and beliefs.

“According to laws of aerodynamics, the bumble bee cannot fly; Its body is too heavy for its wings and that’s the simple reason why.

But the bumble bee doesn’t know this fact, and so it flies anyway for all to see.

Remember this when you’re losing faith or hope — God’s proof that the impossible can be.”
